Timed sketchbook drawing and mobile phone time-lapse video, 25 July ’16
A time-lapse video shot using an i-phone App recorded shadows moving across a blank wall in the early evening, whilst an observational drawing was produced simultaneously of the scene. The intention was to compare how the human eye sees, selects and records visual information differently to a camera.
The wall onto which shadows are cast is the west facade of the Mission Bay Parking structure at 450 South Street, San Francisco, owned by Alexandria Real Estate Equities, designed and constructed by WRNS and Overaa Construction, 2009. The structure has an abstract geometric stucco design on the south facade; perforated aluminum panels veil the north and east facade. The west facade has been left purposefully blank- a research centre is planned for the adjacent allotment, the construction of which would hide the existing wall.

A collaborative pilot exhibition examining contemporary migration of goods, ideas and people. Through drawing, print and sculptural installation, Barbour, Byers and Chiu narrate conflicts of identity within historical frameworks.

Whilst using the studios in Baroda as a base, I explored various locations in Gujarat for research primarily into different aspects of the shipping industry in Gujarat, both historic and contemporary. Locations included the dhow shipyards in Mandvi, on the Rukmavati River, at which traditional wooden dhows are still constructed by hand, and the Alang ship recycling yards with the surrounding pop-up industries that have sprung up and sell every re-usable item salvaged from the ships, from portholes and life rafts to refrigerators and propellors. I also had the opportunity to explore the modernist and historic architecture in and around Ahmedabad, which included Le Corbusier’s Villa Shodan, Louis Khan’s Indian Institute of Management (IIM), and the Adalaj and Ran Ki Vav step wells.

As part of the residency I gave public talks at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda and also at Veer Narmad South Gujarat University in Surat (below), with a live drawing demo. A huge thank-you to the faculties and students for the opportunity and warm reception.

Exhibition at the student Centre Gallery with artist Michael Perrone, 2 Nov ’14 – 1 Jan ’15. The show was the culmination of a one-year faculty research grant from Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar (VCUQ).
